An accurate and efficient method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the projection method as a preconditioner

چکیده
The projection method is a widely used fractional-step algorithm for solving the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Despite numerous improvements to the methodology, however, imposing physical boundary conditions with projection-based fluid solvers remains difficult, and obtaining high-order accuracy may not be possible for some choices of boundary conditions. In this work, we present an unsplit, linearlyimplicit discretization of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations on a staggered grid along with an efficient solution method for the resulting system of linear equations. Since our scheme is not a fractional-step algorithm, it is straightforward to specify general physical boundary conditions accurately; however, this capability comes at the price of having to solve the time-dependent incompressible Stokes equations at each timestep. To solve this linear system efficiently, we employ a Krylov subspace method preconditioned by the projection method. In our implementation, the subdomain solvers required by the projection preconditioner employ the conjugate gradient method with geometric multigrid preconditioning. The accuracy of the scheme is demonstrated for several problems, including forced and unforced analytic test cases and lid-driven cavity flows. These tests consider a variety of physical boundary conditions with Reynolds numbers ranging from 1 to 30000. The effectiveness of the projection preconditioner is compared to an alternative preconditioning strategy based on an approximation to the Schur complement for the time-dependent incompressible Stokes operator. The projection method is found to be a more efficient preconditioner in most cases considered in the present work. 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Extension Ability of Reduced Order Model of Unsteady Incompressible Flows Using a Combination of POD and Fourier Modes
In this article, an improved reduced order modelling approach, based on the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method, is presented. After projecting the governing equations of flow dynamics along the POD modes, a dynamical system was obtained. Normally, the classical reduced order models do not predict accurate time variations of flow variables due to some reasons. The response of the dynam...
متن کاملIncompressible laminar flow computations by an upwind least-squares meshless method
In this paper, the laminar incompressible flow equations are solved by an upwind least-squares meshless method. Due to the difficulties in generating quality meshes, particularly in complex geometries, a meshless method is increasingly used as a new numerical tool. The meshless methods only use clouds of nodes to influence the domain of every node. Thus, they do not require the nodes to be conn...
متن کاملAn overlapping Schwarz method for spectral element solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
Efficient solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in complex domains is dependent upon the availability of fast solvers for sparse linear systems. For unsteady incompressible flows, the pressure operator is the leading contributor to stiffness, as the characteristic propagation speed is infinite. In the context of operator splitting formulations, it is the pressure solve which is the most compu...

The aim of this paper is to give a detailed effect of several parameters such as step height, Reynolds number, contraction ratio, and temperature difference between the entrance and solid boundaries, of a forward-facing step. An accurate length of separation and reattachment zones are achieved. A finite-volume method (FVM) has been developed to study incompressible flow in a forward-facing step...
متن کاملAn Alternative HSS Preconditioner for the Unsteady Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations in Rotation Form
We study the preconditioned iterative method for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations. The rotation form of the Oseen system is considered. We apply an efficient preconditioner which is derived from the Hermitian/Skew-Hermitian preconditioner to the Krylov subspace-iterative method. Numerical experiments show the robustness of the preconditioned iterative methods with respect to the mesh size, ...
